There's always something

Well, we've run into a couple minor glitches. Nothing major, but each will take a little extra time. We discovered yesterday that Daron's mom's maiden name is misspelled on his birth certificate. It hadn't ever been noticed before. It's a relatively minor error (an extra letter), so it may not cause any problems, but I'm waiting for an answer from my social worker about whether or not it should be fixed before submitting our dossier. To fix it would require getting Daron's mom's birth certificate and submitting an application to the state to have it corrected. Probably not too big a deal, but you never know how long it's going to take when you have to go through a government agency.

Today, we received a letter from the US Citizenship and Immigration Services stating that because neither set of fingerprints I had taken were readable, they need an alternative source of criminal history information before they can approve our application to bring a child into the country and grant them citizenship. Yes, apparently I missed my calling for a life of crime, because the ridges on my fingertips are so fine they have a hard time getting a readable set. Luckily, they just require a state police clearance from any state I have lived in in the last 5 years (which is only my current state). I already have copies of that clearance as part of the dossier documentation, so I was able to make a quick photocopy and get it sent off.

The exciting part about having received the letter from the USCIS is that it means they are actively working our application right now. Ninety days is the minimum timeframe in which USCIS approval can be received. I mailed the application to them on 11/9/05, so we're very close to that point. I took it as good news even though we have to send them more info.

As far as dossier progress, we submitted our passport applications on Tuesday and paid the fees to have them expedited. The guy who took our applications told us we could potentially receive them by Saturday, but it would more likely be early next week. Not too bad! Our fabulous friends we had asked to be our references all got their letters done in record time, so we are just waiting on one form from our doctor and the passports and then we should be set (unless we have to get the birth certificate fixed first). Jill, it sounds like you and Daron are on your way. Sorry for the minor glitches but they are just that, minor, and will be quickly resolved. (I hope!)

Here's hoping the rest goes smoothly!
